Choosing an efficient electric option
every time we replace a gas appliance or petrol/diesel vehicle,
can permanently lower our energy bills,
create a cleaner environment and reduce climate emissions.

The best way to run your home - for your wallet and for the climate - is to have all electric appliances and vehicles powered by clean electricity.
It's less than half the running costs of a fossil fuel home and it's how we'll have the biggest impact on climate this decade.

Imagine if you had $3,000 to $5,000 more every year for the rest of your life to spend on your home, family and social activities.  Imagine if it also helped reduce climate emissions.

There is an initial cost to making this change. You can reduce the impact of the upfront costs by changing items gradually as they wear out and by taking advantage of federal/state/council subsidies and rebates.

    Saving $1750 since January 2024

    We've been in our home for 18 months. Since then, we've installed a 6.6Wh solar system, a heat pump and energy-efficient air conditioning. 

    We've been very pleased with these decisions. So far, our solar system has supplied 60% of our energy needs, on average, year round.

    The single biggest impact for the climate and our budget was replacing our gas water system with an electric heat pump. We no longer pay a gas bill. We have instantaneous and reliable hot water every day, powered by our solar system. If only it was so easy to coax Toby into the bath after a beach run!

    We installed a 12kW solar system in 2023. Since then, our electricity bills have decreased substantially, and we have saved $1,318 over the last 12 months.

    Our next step was buying an electric vehicle (BYD Dolphin Premium) in early 2024. Our estimated savings on petrol is $2,100 per annum. We charge our EV during the day at home at no cost at all. We only need to pay at a charging station when travelling more than 300 kilometres. We have driven over 17,000 kilometres in the last 18 months and absolutely love driving our Dolphin!

    Signed up to Amber Energy

    Tom has a 9kW solar and 27kW battery system, a pool and 2 electric vehicles.

    He decided to try out Amber Energy, a wholesale electricity provider and let them control and optimise the use of their home battery and EV charging. 

    According to Tom “being exposed to the wholesale energy market has been a wild ride at times.”

    However, after 12 months Tom is happy with the result. He's ahead about $1,000 for the year.

    Saving $3,800 pa so far.

    Our electricity bill dropped by $1,600 a year after installing a 5kW solar system, and timing our hot water and dishwasher to run around midday when the sun’s out.

    Our fuel and car maintenance dropped by $2,200 a year less since switching our car to an MG4 EV and charging mostly from our rooftop solar.

    The rooftop solar has already paid for itself from the savings and is now supplying most of the energy to fuel our car virtually for free.
    In another 2 years, the difference in price for purchasing the EV will be covered too!
